The Newest GAP-DGB Model of The Wholistic Self-Psyche-Personality

Introduction

The large multi-integrative-dialectic (mid) model you can find below, at first bite, looks very large, mechanistic, complicated, not easy to work with....It has 20 'ego-compartments' where most models of its type have 5 compartments or less. Freud's Model (3 compartments): Id/Ego/Superego; Perls Model (2 compartments): Topdog/Underdog;  Adler's Model (2 compartments: Inferiority Feelings/Superiority Striving (Lifestyle and Lifestyle Goal); Berne's Transactional Analysis Model (5 compartments): Nurturing Parent/Critical Parent/Adult/Adapted Child/Rebellious Child.

So what's with my 20 compartment model? Where did I get all the new 'ego-compartments' from? Cyber-space? Do they have any function? Dysfunction? Application value for a theorist and/or therapist?

In a word -- yes. Or so I believe. All 20 conceptualized ego-compartments have value and function relative to representing some 'phenomenological aspect of our psycho-dynamic self'.

 So now, I just have to sell you on the model by helping you to better understand it.

Let's do this reductionistically by dividing the model into its different part-functions; then we can look at its different types of psycho-dynamic interactions -- both functional and/or dysfunctional, creatively constructive and/or aggressively destructive or deconstructive.

In this regard, let us start with the top 10 compartments of the model. These can be viewed simply as the Object Relations-Transactional Analysis-Gestalt-Jungian-Overt-Covert-Extroverted-Introverted-Active-Passive-Dominant-Submissive-Masculine-Feminine-Creative-Destructive-Life-Death-Hegelian-Nietzschean-Schopenhauerian-Freudian-Irrational-Rational-Narcissistic-Hedonistic-Righteous-Rebellious-Apollonian-Reality-Confronting-Dionysian-Pleasure-Seeking-Nurturing-Emotional-Spiritual-Topdog-Underdog ego-compartments.

Did I lose you?

There are a lot of potentially interacting psycho-dynamic bi-polar spectrums alive and well -- or unwell, active or suppressed, overt or covert -- in the personality at any one time...or spread out over a greater length of time...Too many to count...So I just gave you a partial sample...

Conceptual representation will never completely represent the infiniteness of life's expansiveness, the infiniteness of the personality's potential expansiveness, nor all of its constantly changing life and death features and patterns...

As Heraclitus is quoted as saying....'You cannot step twice into the same river; as other waters are continually flowing in'....

Therefore, you can never get a map or model or paradigm or theory or concept completely right, because the second you think you have it right, the territory has changed. And you have to start again. Or admit imperfection. The map or model will never totally represent the territory -- not Freud's, not Adler's, not Perls', not Jung's, not Berne's, and not mine. (I will take credit for that quote based on my General Semantic --Korzybski and Hayakawa -- background.

Hegel wrote something close to the tune of 'Every theory carries the seeds of its own self-destruction.' That is a brilliant philosophical statement -- perhaps, along with the Heraclitus quote, one of the most brilliant quotes stated in the history and evolution of Western Philosophy.

So if every theory carries the seeds of its own self-destruction, then where is the self-destruction most likely to occur? Well, probably at the conceptual and theoretical boundaries of the theory. After all, it was at the very 'anal-retentive, anal-righteous', boundaries of Freud's Classical Psychoanalysis that all his most brilliant co-workers left him -- Adler, Jung, Rank, Stekel, Ferenzci, Wilhelm Reich, Melanie Klein (she was the only one who was allowed to stay within the confines of 'Psychoanalysis' but she radically changed Freud's model in a way that is now called 'Object Relations', not 'Classical Psychoanalysis), and then all the 'neo-Freudians -- or 'neo-Adlerians' -- Horney, Fromm, Erickson, Sullivan -- and the Transactional Analysists -- Eric Berne -- and the Gestalt Therapists -- Fritz Perls -- and the other Object Relationists -- Fairbairn, Winnicott, Guntrip -- and Bion -- and Lacan -- and the Primal Therapist -- Janov --  -- and the Traumacy-Seductionist Theorist -- Masson...and The Rogerian Theorist -- Carl Rogers -- and all the Cognitive Theorists, and The Cognitve-Behavioral Theorists -- and the Humanistic-Existentialists -- Rollo May, Victor Frankl...

Have I left any doubt that maps and models can be -- and always will be -- changed -- to keep up with that constantly flowing river, with constantly changing waters...that we can call 'life'...

According to Hegel, 'truth' -- or a greater closeness to 'truth' -- comes with integration, synthesis, synergy....of opposing 'partial truths'....

Sounds good to me...If it is 'conceptual boundaries' that we need to be most 'wary' of -- especially the most 'narcissistically and righteously guarded ones' (i.e., Freud and Classical Psychoanalysis) -- then let's integrate, propagate, synthesize, synergize -- and maybe we can get closer to 'The Absolute Godliness of Map-Making'....It worked pretty well for 'Quantum Physics' -- an integration between 'The Particle' and 'The Wavelength' Theory of Energy and Physics....

What I am basically advocating here -- in the spirit of Hegel -- is 'conceptual and theoretical copulation-intercourse'...towards 'The Absolute Godliness and Perfection of Concept and Theory Making'....Re-worded, what I am advocating is 'Multi-Conceptual and Theoretical Diversity and Integration'...

If I was a politician or a political theorist I would advocate more 'Multi-Dialectic-Political Parties -- like 'The Republican-Democrat Party'... or 'The Conservative-Liberal Party'...or reverse the names if you would prefer...

Put another way, if you can't beat them, then integrate them...

If schools of psychology and political parties are 'dysfunctionalized' at the edges of their 'conceptual-theoretical boundaries', then do what the human body and human mind does -- create a 'flexible bipolar spectrum' -- in fact, many, many of them -- which allows you to move anywhere along the line of the spectrum according to the external demands of reality and/or your/our own internal needs, impulses, wishes, drives, fantasies...with ethics, integrity, caring about others, character...and our own 'Central Ego' mediating the best possible solution and/or conflict resolution...

The stricter your boundaries are, the less room there is for 'maximum flexibility of movement depending on the individual context of the situation...

I like the title of Hegel's classic philosophical treatise -- 'The Phenomenology of Spirit' -- even though this work is far too 'Apollonian' -- far too 'rationally boring' -- for me...

That is why some of the philosophers need to be integrated as well...like...Hegel and Nietzsche...Hegel and Schopenhauer....Hegel and Schelling...Hegel and Kierkegaard...

Hegel and Nietzsche is a particularly 'creatively explosive dialectic couple' -- like McCartney and Lennon...

Nietzsche's first book, 'The Birth of Tragedy' -- the story of Apollo and Dionysus trying to live together and get along with each other inside the human personality, the Self -- is a perfect blend of Hegelian and Nietzschean Theory. It's a pity that Nietzsche went and spoiled it by abandoning the spirit and the essence of his first book, like Freud abandoned his first two theories -- The Traumacy Theory and The Seduction Theory.

Some philosophers and psychologists don't know when they have got it right. They move on to other 'inferior' theories....

So call this model below of the human psyche a 'greatest hits model' of the late 1800s, and all of the 1900s.
You can protect the 'anally-righteous and narcissistic' by changing the names to suit anyone's and everyone's pleasure and fancy-fantasy...

The Psychoanalysts can use psychoanalytic language, the Adlerians can use Adlerian language, the Jungians can use Jungian language, the Humanistic-Existentialists can use Humanistic-Existential Language, the Gestaltists can use Gestalt language, the Rogerians can use Rogerian language, The Object-Relationists can use Object Relations language, the Rankians can use Rankian language, the Frommians can use Frommian language, The Cognitive-Behavioral Theorists can use CBT language....I think you get the picture...

This is a 'multi-linguistic-semantic' model....

And I will be the translator of most of the main languages that can be incorporated into this model...

Call this the 'Integrative Model' of all models....reaching both for the 'Hegelian Multi-Integrative-Dialectic Absolute' and 'Nietzsche's/Zarathustra's/Dionysus' Mountain Peak at the same time..Hegel provides the dialectic model, and Nietzsche provides the drive to strive to be the best we can be at whatever we choose to be...

It's official...Hegel's Hotel is no longer Hegel's Hotel...

It's now...'The Hegel-Nietzsche Hotel'...

And within The Hegel-Nietzsche Hotel, here is the newest GAP-DGB Model of The Personality-Self-Psyche. For those of you unfamiliar with the acronym I am using to label my particular brand of multi-dialectic (multi-bipolar), humanistic-existential psychology, let me quickly repeat the meaning of this acronym....

'G' stands for Gestalt;

'A' stands for Adlerian and Analytic (Jungian, Transactional Analytic);

'P' stands for Psychoanalytic.

'D' stands for Dialectic;

'G' stands for 'Gap';

'B' stands for 'Bridging'

GAP-DGB Philosophy-Psychology and Philo-Psycho-Therapy.

Some quick words of advice...

1. Don't fall into Nietzsche's Abyss...or climb out fast...

2. Beware of all Compensatory Addiction Pits of Self-Destruction in your alleged effort to climb out of Nietzsche's Abyss...

3. Work hard and be courageous in your effort to traverse the 'existential tightrope' between 'non-being and being', between 'being and becoming'....from reality to dream fantasy to reality again...

4. Enjoy yourself and feel free to celebrate when you cross your existential tightrope and arrive on Nietzsche's/Zarathustra's/Dionysus' Mountain Peak'....and have one for me!
